Study: Consumers Overspend When Using Gift Cards

First Data finds shoppers spend an average of $59 above the original value of the cards they receive.

A study conducted by IMA member company First Data finds that gifts cards not only motivate workers and sales-team members to boost performance, but also to boost their spending. Consumers on average report overspending the original gift card amount by $59. Overspending on gift cards has been increasing every year for the past five years and is up $21 from last year.
